My love of the history that lies beneath our feet led me to consider what has been left behind by past cultures: artefacts including jewellery, pottery and the like. Many burial chambers from the Bronze Age to the Romans and Anglo Saxons have revealed much, as have random buried hoards excavated from fields.
I began considering how I could bring this into my work, and after attending a bead-making workshop I was captivated by the possibilities of making beads combining my love of history, geology and archaeology, that could also create a link with my paintings. My necklaces are loosely reminiscent of those found buried in ancient tombs and chambers.
Each bead is hand-made and hand-decorated and therefore unique in shape, texture and colour. Using a variety of pigments, metallic powders and foils to decorate the surfaces, they are then sealed, making them totally waterproof.
The small glass seed beads are contemporary and sourced from all over the world, providing a comfortable link between the past and the present.
I prefer to think of my necklaces as 'wearable art' rather than jewellery!
